Making Of Magnets Flashcards
What is a domain
A little group of atoms
Why doesn’t a normal piece of iron act like a magnet
Because it’s domain are pointing in different directions
2 ways of making a magnet
Stroking a piece of iron in the same direction.
Leaving iron next to another magnet for some time
Can a magnet eve just have a north or South Pole
No, if you break a magnet in two, the 2 halves would both be magnets, each with a north and South Pole as all the domains are still lined up.
Why does heating a magnet remove its magnetism.
As iron is a metal, when it is heated it’s particles are free to vibrate. This means it will magnetise in different directions.
Why should you not drop a magnet on the floor
The vibration let some atoms move around in the metal. The domains move around and point in different directions
Why would a compass not be useful near the north or South Pole.
As the compass always points to either the north or South Pole, when you are near, the compass would spin round. Or at the North Pole the compass would just point south
When don’t compasses work?
If you put a lice of steel near it. In countryside-near steel fences. Rocks that contain a lot of iron
