Cells Flashcards
Cytoplasm
A living jelly, which occupies most of the cell. The cell’s chemical reactions take place in the cytoplasm.
Cell membrane
Hold the cytoplasm together and acts as a barrier controlling what goes into and out of the cell as it is permeable ( allowing liquids/gas to pass through) to some substances
Nucleus
Controls the activities of the cell. It contains a complete set of instructions for cell and genetic material like DNA.
Cell wall
A very strong layer on the outside of the cell membrane. It protects the cell and keeps it in shape, preventing it from collapsing or bursting.
Vacuole
This contains a solution of water, salt and sugar called cell sap, which helps the cell to be congested/turgid
Chloroplasts
Organelles that contain a green substance called chlorophyll, which captures light energy and uses it to make food for the plant in photosynthesis.
