Acids & Alkalis Flashcards
Properties of Acids
Acids are an important group of chemicals. Acids often have sharp or sour tastes. Strong acids can wear away or corrode metals, but many are weak and harmless.
All acids contain hydrogen.
Properties of Alkalis
Alkalis are an important group of chemicals. Many strong alkalis are described as caustic, which means they can burn living tissue. We can find acids and alkalis all over the place, in food, soap, shampoo and even your stomach.
All alkalis contain hydroxide.
Everyday acids
Lemon juice, orange juice, milk, vinegar, soft drinks-(coke, sprite etc.), citric fruits-(orange, lemon, limes, tangerines grapefruit etc.)
Everyday alkalis
Soap, bicarbonate of soda, shampoo, toothpaste, bleach.
Types of indicators
UI, Blue litmus paper, pink litmus paper, Phenol Pthalein, liquid litmus, UI paper, red cabbage indicator.
p.H stands for…
Potential for Hydrogen
Neutralisation
As an acid is added to an alkali a neutral reaction occurs. The pH at this point is p.H. 7, and the solution is neutral. This solution is made of the salt sodium chloride and water both of which have a neutral pH.
