main features of social learning theory Flashcards
what type of learning is SLT
learning through obsevation and imitation of role models
what are the features of SLT
modelling - demonstrated by role model
observation - active process
imitation - behaviour imitated, repeated depends on reinforcement or punishment
vicarious reinforcement/punishment - whether behaviour is imitated depends on if the role model is punished or rewarded
what are the characteristics of role models
same gender
simiar age
as high status/percieved as important
can identify with observer
what is vicarious reinforcement/punishment
seeing the consequences of the behaviour for the model then chosing whether to copy it or not
if rewarded= more likely to imitate
if punished = less likely to imitate
evaluate SLT
+ kubingi, dogs watched owner push handle of box to release ball10x, reproduced behaviour
+ takes into account cognitive process which OC and CC dont, more complete explanation
+ bandura 1961,63,65
- limitations in testing, behaviour observed may not be reproduced immediately, results may lack validity in findings
- experiments carried out on animals, humans have greater understanding of moral and social norms, more tought bedore reproducing behaviour, generalisability
