A
  • characterised with being extremely underweight
  • about 15% lower
  • sufferers tend to see themselves as fat even when they are not
  • usually starts in teenage years
  • girls can stop mensturating as their bodies shut down
  • boys also suffer but at a lower increasing rate
  • only 1 in 10 people recieve treatment and only 35% of those getting treatment recieve it at a soecialist facility
  • important for society as they have the highest death rate of any mental illness (4% die)
  • understand how the condition is caused so we can develop effective treatments
  • increasing number of role models and celebrities portraying the ideal image as being extremely thin and anorexia being a condition that occurs frequently

  • people imitate role models and celebs who are similar
  • tend for size 0 models on catwalks means that wanting to be thin is common and anorexia may follow
  • people in the media get praised for losing weight, associate fame and money with being thin

  • advertisers use CC to associate being thin with fame and popularity which encourages weight loss and reduction in BMI

conditining weight loss to equal happiness as celebs are paraised

how does operant conditioning explain the key question

A
  • ideal from media to be thin results in us seeing being thin as what we want to aspire towards
  • rewards for being thin = praise, admiration,envy from peers
  • continue to do things to remain thin - not eating
  • negative reinforcement for being fat = being teased
    will stop eating to avoid being teased
    people will stop eating to avoid stigma for being obese
  • negative reinforcement would motivate someone to continue not eating

what studies support the key question

A
  • crisp et al found that dancers and fashion models were more likely to develop anorexia
  • mumford found that Arab and Asians were more likely to develop eating disorders when moving to the west
  • owen et al found that the ideal body shape has become more thin over 30 years with increased rates of anorexia
  • barlow and durands research found that half the contestants on Miss America were 15% below recommened BMI showing that ideal body image for girls can cause the disorder

A

Eysenck and Flannagan (2000)’s research rejects Found that although all young women in the west are subjected to the media, only 3-4% of them develop EDs
Therefore there must be other factors involved

evaluate Owens research

A

Owen et al and Lai’s research is weak
They use correlational data (e.g. amount of Chinese people with anorexia correlated with how westernised the culture is)
Therefore they cannot infer cause and effect between the media and anorexia so there may be other factors involved
