See whether the brains of London taxi drivers would be different considering their exceptional knowledge of the city and the many hours they had spent behind the wheel navigating the streets of London.
Sample
16 taxi drivers
50 non-taxi drivers
All male, right handed, range of ages
Procedure
MRI data of each participant studied
- Vortex based morphometry (VBM) measured density of grey matter
- pixel counting of scan to identify area/size of hippocampus
Results/Conclusion
t. Posterior hippocampus larger
t. Anterior hippocampus smaller
no other differences
Volume of right posterior hippocampus directly correlated with time spent as taxi driver
