Aim
Test the role of acetylcholine in the encoding of cognitive maps in humans.
Sample
20 male adults, mean age 28
Procedure
70-90 minutes before task, injected with either scopolamine (antagonist) or placebo.
Put in fMRI to play ‘Arena Task’ (measuring spatial memory)
- learn to locate object in area
- screen went blank 30 secs, told to rehearse navigation
- relocate object from new start point using spatial memory
brain activity measure, 6 trials
3-4 weeks later
Redid task but opposite treatment. (counterbalanced repeated measures)
Results and conclusion
Scopolamine showed significant reduction in activation of hippocampus. Shows that acetylcholine plays a key role in the encoding of spatial memory.
