Aim
Determine if men would take greater risks in the presence of an attractive female, and see if testosterone played a role in this behavior.
Sample
96 Australian male skateboarders, around 21/22
Procedure
2pm-6pm
43 - male condition
53 - attractive female condition
Male researcher watching: Asked to do 10 easy and 10 hard tricks
Had break
F/M researcher watching: same procedure
Success, crash landing, or aborted attempt (low risk taking)
Watches - measure heart rate
Saliva - measure testosterone
Results and conclusion
Female - more risks (aborted less), higher testosterone
No difference in heart rate between conditions
Shows that young men take more risks in presence of attractive women, and testosterone may account for this behavior.
Supports evolutionary theory because risk signifies strength and dominance (intimidating).
