Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Flashcards
1
Q
What is magnetic resonance imaging?
A
o Cross-sectional imaging using magnetic field and radiofrequency signals “read” by a computer
2
Q
Name clinical uses for MRI
A
- Best modality for visualizing soft tissue (ligaments and tendons)
- Bone tumors
- stress fractures
- osteomylelitis
- avascular necrosis
- Pathologies of intervertebral discs
3
Q
Name 3 common types of MRI scans
A
- With contrast (blood vessels, scars, tumors, infection)
- Arthrography (soft tissue tears and joint spaces)
- Myelography (spinal stenosis)
4
Q
List the contraindications of MRI
A
- Pacemakers
- intracranial aneurysm clips
- foreign metal objects
- orthopedic hardware
- Large tattoos (due to high iron content in pigments)
- Cochlear implants
- Kidney disease
- allergy to contrast/iodine
5
Q
List Pros and Cons of MRI
A
o Pros:
- Excellent resolution of all soft tissue
- No exposure to ionizing radiation
o Cons:
- Very expensive
- Poor for visualizing bone
- Time consuming process
- Troublesome for patients who suffer from claustrophobia unless using open scanner
