  • Most common are sports injuries / trauma
  • Osteoarthritis (aka wear and tear, over ½ million total knee replacements are performed annually)
  • Neoplasms – distal femur and proximal tibia – 11% of childhood cancers are bone cancer

List order of diagnostic imaging choices for the knee

A
  1. X-ray: fractures, dislocations, and articular changes
    (done NWB)
  2. CT scan: complex fractures and articular defects (good to pick up bone fragments)
  3. MRI: menisci, articular cartilage, and osteochondritis dissecans
  4. Ultrasound: tendons and trauma with a foreign body
  5. Bone scans: evaluation of neoplasms
