Magnetic Compass Flashcards
1
Q
Variation
A
Angular difference between true north and magnetic north.
2
Q
Agonic line
A
The line where there is no angular difference.
3
Q
Isogonic
A
Lines showing the angular lines difference.
4
Q
Deviation
A
Error due to magnetic interference within the aircraft.
5
Q
Magnetic dip
A
- Magnet in compass tries to point to pole/earth’s center
- Causes errors in turns and acceleration
- Acceleration error: function of Newton’s first law
- Turning error: caused by vertical lines of flux near poles
6
Q
Acceleration error- ANDS
A
Accelerating gives a turn to the North and Decelerating to the South.
7
Q
Turning errors
A
- When turning from East or West Heading
- Undershoot North
- Initially indicate turn to opposite direction (northern hemisphere)
- Overshoot South
- Heading will lead the turn (northern hemisphere)
8
Q
Oscillation error
A
Erratic movement of the compass due to turbulence
