Reduces striated muscle contraction and blocks peripheral neuromuscular transmission by reducing acetylcholinesterase release at the myoneural junction
Manages seizure in toxemia of pregnancy
Induces uterine relaxation
Bronchodilation after beta-agonists and anticholinergics have been used
Indications
Eclamptic Seizures
Torsades de Pointes
Hypomagnesemia
TCA Overdose
Digitalis induced dysrhythmias
Contraindications
Heart Blocks
Renal Diseases
Adult Eclamptic Seizures Dose
4 G IV over 10 minutes in 50 mL of D5W
Adult Torsades de Pointes Dose
2 G IV over 1-2 minutes in 50 mL of D5W
Adult Torsades de Pointes Maintenance Infusion Dose
2 G in 500 mL of NS at 30-60 gtts/min
Pediatric Asthma/Bronchospasm Dose
25 mg/kg over 10 minutes IV in 50 - 100 cc of NS
Also used for adults
