- John disagreed with Archbishop of Canterbury appointed by the pope, as he believed he would obey the pope instead of himself
- Led to him appointing his own archbishop and the pope excommunicating John and so the whole country- uproar

- John a weak king who made unrealistic demands on the Barons
- Barons increasingly upset with things such as taxes, scutage etc

- No scutage shall be imposed on Barons except common council
- No freemen should be imprisoned without proper trial
- a group of 25 Barons will be created to monitor the king and ensure he follows Magna Carta’s terms

- Disliked it- so he ripped it up, causing a civil war in 1216 against the Barons
