Macroscopic Neuroanatomy Flashcards
Peripheral nervous system
Contains the ganglia and nerves and is ultimately connected to the central nervous system
Central nervous system
Spinal nerves and cranial nerves are in this
Peripheral nerves
Functions are sensory motor autonomic (heart rate, blood pressure…)
Cranial nerves
There are 12
Optic nerve —
Spinal nerves
Neck down
Autonomic nervous system
Heart rate blood flow
Consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic
Sympathetic ANS
Promotes energy
Activated by exercise Stress and powerful emotions
Activation: adrenal gland releases adrenaline, sympathies adrenal activation, “flight or fight” prepares for action even if action is not necessary
Parasympathetic ANS
Promotes digestion and excretion
Stimulates salivation and stomach excretion, intestinal activity
Can be activated by stress
Reduce heart rate and breathing
