Macromolecules Flashcards
Cohesion
The attraction of molecules for other molecules of the same kind
Adhesion
The process by which two different substances stick together
Hydrogen bond
A special type of attraction between molecules, not a covenant bind to a hydrogen atom
Surface tension
The tendency of liquid surfaces at red to shrink into a minimum surface area possible
Hydrophilic
Having a tendency to mix with, dissolve in, or to be wetted by water
Hydrophobic
Tending to repel or fail to mix with water
Monomer
Atoms that bond together to form more complex structures such as polymers
Polymer
Repeating units of identical or newly identical compounds
Hydrolysis
The process used to break down polymers into monomers
Dehydration Synthesis
A reaction that combines molecules and results in loss of water
Elements of carbohydrates
Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen
Monomer name of carbohydrates
Monosaccharides
Polymer name of carbohydrate
Polysaccharides
Function and example of carbohydrates
Energy source in organisms
