Evolution Flashcards
Gradualism
Evolution proceeds in small, gradual steps
Evolution
Cumulative change in a group of organisms
Adaptive radiation
A large number of species arise from a single common ancestor in response to an ecological opportunity
Punctuated equilibrium
Rapid spurts of genetic change causing rapid speciation with long periods of little change
Convergent evolution
Unrelated species evolve similar traits even though they live in different parts of the world
Genetic drift
Any change in allele frequencies in a population that results from chance
Divergent evolution
Two or more species share a common ancestor but evolves differently due to their environment
Bottleneck
Occurs when a population declines to a very low level then rebounds causing the population to have reduced diversity
Founder effect
Occurs when a group of individuals with different allele frequency than the original population must become separated, uncommon alleles may become common
Genetic equilibrium
Must have no genetic drift, no gene flow, no natural selection, no mutation, and mating must be random
