Macbeth-A1,S1 Flashcards
What characters were in Act 1 Scene 1?
The 3 witches
Analyse ‘fair is foul, and foul is fair’
Sets the scene and shows that throughout the play things won’t be as they seem. Equivocating shows confusion and how they are supernatural. It is a paradox and how confusing the witches are. Alliteration of f further emphasises the sinister feel of the line. It is later echoed by Macbeth ‘fair and foul a day I have not seen’-shows the control over the characters already.
Where is the scene set and then where do they agree to meet Macbeth later on?
It is set in a deserted place and they agree to meet upon the heath.
What quote is also a paradox and foreshadows war and death?
‘When the battle’s lost and won’-it foreshadows killing for evil and murder. It also shows that even in winning, we are losing people and killing which is bad.
What is important about the ‘thunder and lightning’ when the witches are present?
It is pathetic fallacy and so shows how something bad will happen. Also it sets a scary and supernatural atmosphere and seems they are bad because they are destructive.
