M7: Agricultural Infectious Diseases Flashcards
what are the factors affecting the incidence of infectious disease?
host factors, pathogen factors, environmental factors
examples of host factors?
- susceptibility to disease, access to pathogens, weakened immunity, drought/heatwave stress
pathogen factors?
- availability, transfer between hosts, adhere and invade host tissue
environmental factors?
- overcrowding, lack of hygiene causing build-up of waste, reservoirs
causes of fungi in plants?
- reservoirs in contaminated seeds, farm machinery, soil and weeds. These are transmitted by wind and water and enter via stomata and wounds.
causes of bacteria in plants?
- reservoirs in soil, weeds and seeds. Transmitted on hands and equipment, and can only reproduce in warm weather, overcrowding, and bad soil
the scientific name for Panama Disease of Bananas?
fusarium oxysporus fungi
symptoms of Panama disease?
yellowing and wilting of leaves, splitting of stems
how is Panama’s disease transmitted?
root-root contact and contaminated soil from shoes and machinery
Biological effects of infectious diseases in plants?
- wilting, destruction of tissue, loss of conducting tissue, abnormal growth
social and economic effects of infectious diseases in plants?
- reduced agricultural yield
- loss of trading opportunities
- economic loss for farmers
what is endemic?
consistently present in a region
what are exotic diseases?
introduced diseases
what is epizootic?
animal equivalent of epidemic
what is zoonosis?
disease that can be transmitted to humans
