M5: Female Reproductive system Flashcards
What are the features of reproductive success in mammals?
- internal fertilisation
-implantation - pregnancy
what are reproductive organs called?
gonads
role of hormones?
signalling molecules responsible for communication between organs and tissues
what are the types of hormones in the female reproductive system?
- androgens
- oestrogens
- progesterones
what are androgens?
male hormones responsible for the control, development, and function of male sex organs and characteristics. higher in males
what are oestrogens?
hormones responsible for the control, development, and function of female sex organs and characteristics. higher in females
what are progesterones?
hormones important in pregnancy for stimulating milk and initiating menstruation
example of hormone control?
progestin as an artificial hormone used for both control (progesterone and oestrogen)
what is FSH and what does it do?
- follicle-stimulating hormone
- controls when eggs ripen and release hormones
what do oestrogen and progesterone regulate?
- ovarian cycle
- menstrual cycle
- lactation
- maintenance of pregnancy
what is LH and what does it do?
- luteinising hormone
- controls when eggs are released
what phases occur in the ovarian cycle?
- follicular
- luteinising
what is the follicular phase?
- egg forming
- maturism of ovarian follicles
- mature eggs released
what is the luteinising phase?
- pregnancy prep
- builds up the follicle to yellow protein lutein called corpus luteum
- secretes progesterone to prepare for pregnancy
what is involved in the uterine cycle?
- menses > period
- pre-ovulation > new lining forms
- secretion > corpeus luteum secretes progesterone
- pre-menstruation > fertilised egg implants
- placenta secreting
