M6- Topic 3: Urban dynamics Part 1 Urban Dynamics of Change: Urban Decay and Renewal Flashcards
What is Urban Decay
The deterioration of the urban environment whereby:
- urban infrastructure fall into disrepair
- Buildings are left empty for long periods of time
When and where did urban decay occur in Sydney
- When: 1960’s-70’s
- Where: Sydney CBD (Newtown, Glebe, Pyrmont, Darling harbour)
Why is Urban Decay happening in Sydney (4)
- The global restructuring in the 60’s and 70’s
- Advancements in technology
- Globalisation through improved communication technology
- Decentralisation of remining manufacturing firms in suburbs (cheap land)
How did The global restructuring in the 60’s and 70’s effect Sydney (Urban Decay)
change in Sydney’s economic character from blue colour (labour intensive) ➝ white collar (intellectually intensive)
How did Advancements in technology affect Sydney (Urban Decay)
Automation of labour ➝ increase redundancy of workers ➝ increased unemployment
How did Globalisation through communication technology affect Sydney (Urban Decay)
offshoring of manufacturing ➝ closure of domestic manufacturing ➝ increased unemployment
How did the decentralisation of manufacturing affect Sydney (Urban Decay)
Moved blue collar workers and their families away from Sydney, due to the lack of demand for their skills in Sydney. ➝ leading to many residential buildings to become unoccupied
What are the consequences of these effects of Sydney’s (Urban decay) (3)
- Sydney’s CBD went into decay
- Economic restructuring from blue ➝ white collar workers, grew the tertiary sector ➝ expanded into the harbourside (CBD)
- renewal project of CBD in 1992
What is an example of a area in sydney that went into decay
Pyrmont Ultimo
Why did Pyrmont ultimo fall into decay
- 1970: advancements in containerisation, saw the creation of the container handling facility in Port Botany ➝ left factories, railways, and maritime equipment unused and obsolete.
In response to the economic restructure of the CBD what happened to Pyrmont Ultimo
- Commonwealth Government’s ‘Building Better Cities’ program: allocated $200 million to its renewal (1992)
What is Urban Renewal
the redevelopment and renovation of decayed or blighted areas to better meet the needs of the people
what are types of Urban Renewal 92)
- Gentrification: renovation of existing dwellings and urban infrastructure
- Revitalisation through redevelopment ( knock down)
When did renewal happen in Sydney
- 1960’s:gentrification of terrace housing by yuppies and dink’s (in paddington and Surry hills)
- 1990s-2000s: construction of multi unit dwellings in the inner city areas through redevelopment of the area
What effect did the urban renewal have on Sydney
- due to increase in investment, property and price living have dramatically increased in the inner city
- increase in demand for inner city residence ➝ construction of multi unit dwellings, which surpassed the amount suburban dwellings
