M3.5 Flashcards
What is internal resistance (IR)?
The resistance inside a battery connected to a load
What happens to the internal resistance when the battery discharges?
The internal resistance rises
At what percentage will a internal resistance battery effect the electrical systems?
At above 75% discharge
What happens if the terminals of a battery aren’t clean?
The connection won’t be very goof and it also offers an additional resistance to the current
What is the difference between primary and secondary cells (batteries)?
Primary cells cannot be recharged but secondary cells can
What types of batteries are used on aircraft?
Lead acid or nickel
Lead acid cells have a voltage of 2V when charged so how many volts in the final discharge?
1.83 volts
Nickel cadmium cells have a voltage of 1.2v when charged so how many volts in the final discharge?
1 volts
When must you refill the electrolyte in a nickel cadmium battery?
When it is fully charged because it will rise whilst charging
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a nickel cadmium to lead acid battery?
Advantages: -better power to weight ratio -closed circuit voltage remains almost constant throughout discharge -larger capacity Disadvantages: -more costly -larger
What should you remember when adding multiple batteries into a circuit?
That they’re the same type of battery
What the difference between adding batteries in series and in parallel?
When you add them in series you add the voltage together. When adding them in parallel you add the current together.
