M3.1 Flashcards
Electricity causes four different effects. What are these?
Heat
Magnetic
Light
Chemical Action
What is the most outer shell in an atom called?
Valence Orbit
How does a semi-conductor work?
It is a insulator until you add other foreign atoms (doping) by heat or light to turn it into a conductor
What is doping?
This is the procedure of adding a new element to a semi conductor to changes its properties
What allows the electrons in a metallic bond to jump from one to the next?
This is because the high density of the metallic structure
Why is a metal a good conductor?
Because of its high mobility of its electrons
How many atoms are in the outer/valence shell in a good conductor?
A good conductor has less than four in the outer/valence shell
What happens if you add heat to a semi-conductor?
You increase the conductivity
How many atoms make an atom chemically very stable?
Four atoms
How many atoms are in an insulators outer shell
More than four
What is electric current?
The flow or movement of electrons
What does electrically neutral mean?
When the number of protons in the nucleus is equal to the number of electrons orbiting it.
How electrically charged are:
- protons
- neutrons
- electrons
- positive
- neutrally
- negative
Are the number of protons in the nucleus the same as the number of electrons?
Yes
What is the voltage needed to take electrons from an insulator?
Anything exceeding 3volts
