M3.10 Flashcards
What is magnetism?
It is that some materials can exert a force on other materials
What happens if you break a magnet into multiple pieces?
It will retain it magnetic field as if it was one magnet
What is demagnetisation?
The removal of the alignment of the molecular magnets
How can you achieve demagnetise?
- by heat
- by mechanical force
- by an altering magnetic field
How does demagnetisation by heat work?
The heat will will cause the nuclei to vibrate and will then rearrange the molecular magnets
How does demagnetisation by mechanical force work?
Using high amounts of force to smash the magnet will cause some magnetism to be lost
How does demagnetisation by alternating magnetic field work?
When you expose ferromagnetic to a magnetic field the polarisation of the magnet Will change
What are the three types materials when it comes to being magnetic?
- ferromagnets
- Paramagnets
- Diamagnets
What is a ferromagnets?
They have a low magnetic resistance so the magnetic force will go through the ferromagnet instead of the air
What is a paramagnet?
They are just a little bit weaker than ferromagnets so they take less lines of a magnetic field
What Is a diamagnets?
They have a higher magnetic resistance than air so the lines try to avoid passing through the material
What happens if a current carrying wire is wound to a coil?
The magnetic field becomes stronger
What causes the magnetic field?
The current
What is flux density?
I’d how close the lines are together in the magnetic flux
