Lymphomas Flashcards
What causes lymphomas
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)
Autoimmunity
Immunocompromised patients
What is a hodgkin lymphoma
Is a solid tumor characterized by painless, progressive hypertrophy of lymphoid tissue
What are the characteristics of hodgkin lymphoma
- Contains reed-sternberg cells
- Reactive white blood cells
- Splenomegaly. ( increased spleen)
What are characteristics of reed sternberg cells
- They are giant
- Binucleated
- Abundant cytoplasm and prominent nucleoli
What does the presence of reed sternberg cells signify clinically
Is a definitive histologic characteristic of hodgkin disease
Mention the categories/ classes of hodgkin lymphoma
- Nodular lymphoma ( predominant hodgkin)
- Classical hodgkin lymphoma
What is a Nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma
Is a B cell neoplasm composed of relatively rare neoplastic cells ( popcorn cells) scattered within nodules of reactive lymphocyte
What is Nodular-lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma?
It is a B-cell neoplasm composed of relatively rare neoplastic cells (lymphocytic/histiocytic or “popcorn” cells) scattered within nodules of lymphoid tissue.
How is the morphological architecture of the lymph node tissue in nodula lymphocyte hodkin lyphoma
- It is replaced by a nodular proliferation of small lymphocytes
- scattered lymphocytic/histiocytic or popcorn cells.
What is the composition of the surrounding nodular background?
It’s composed of CD20+ small cells and scattered T lymphocytes.
What type of cell morphology is associated with Nodular-lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma?
popcorn” cell morphology.
Clinical features of Nodular lymhocyte, hodkin lymphoma
Most patients are males in their 30s
Mostely peripheral lymph nodes involved
Mediastinal lymphadenopathy
Define classical hodkin lymphoma
Comprises a heterogeneous group of lymphoid neoplasms derived from the geminal center
What are the characteristics of classical hodkin lymphoma
- Presence of relatively few diagnostic neoplastic cells, ree-sternberg cells, in rich background
2.peaks between age 15 and 34 and older than 54 years
Classical hodkin is divided into 4 subtypes based on architectural features. Mention them
- Nodular sclerosis
- Mixed cellularitu
- Lymphocyte rich
- Lymphocyte depleted
