Lymphoid Tissue Flashcards
What is the primary function of lymphoid tissues?
Its function is to initiate and coordinate the immune response
Name two types of lymphoid tissues in the human body?
Primary (bone marrow) and secondary (Lymph nodes and spleen)
Where are Peyer’s patches located in the body?
The intestine (ileum)
What is the immune role of the thymus?
Site of T cell maturation to immunocompetence
What are the main functions of lymph nodes?
Antigen delivered from the tissues via the lymphatic system
Which lymphoid organ involutes (decreases in size) with age?
Thymus because there is loss of epithelia cells
What is the significance of the spleen in the immune system?
Stores and filters blood and makes WBCs to protect from infection
What is the difference between primary and secondary lymphoid organs?
Primary is Bone Marrow and thymus and it the site of immune cell development and maturation. Secondary is Lymph nodes and spleen, and it is the site of antigen presentation that initiates the acquires immune response
Which cells are primarily found in the germinal centres of lymph nodes?
B cells
What is the role of the lymphatic vessels in the lymphatic system?
Regulate fluid, transporting lipids and assisting in immune surveillance
What is the significance of MALT in the immune system?
Initiate immune response to specific antigen along the mucosal surface
How do lymphocytes move between lymphoid tissues and the bloodstream?
Through using afferent lymph or high endothelial venules for migration to the lymph node
