Lymphocytes Flashcards
Where are lymphocytes found in the body?
Lymphocytes are found in the tonsils, lymph glands, spleen, and in the blood.
What are the two types of lymphocytes?
The two types of lymphocytes are B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes.
What do B-lymphocytes do when they recognize antigens?
B-lymphocytes make special proteins called antibodies to destroy germs.
How do antibodies destroy germs?
Antibodies destroy germs by:
- Causing bacterial cells to burst.
- Labeling the germs so that phagocytes can ingest them.
- Making germs clump together so that they are easy to recognize.
- Neutralizing bacterial toxins.
What is natural immunity?
Natural immunity is when antibodies respond quickly if the same germs are encountered again because B-lymphocytes “remember” them.
Where are T-lymphocytes mainly found?
T-lymphocytes are mainly found in the lymph glands.
What are the two types of T-cells?
The two types of T-cells are CD4 cells (helper cells) and killer T-cells.
What do CD4 (helper) T-cells do?
CD4 (helper) T-cells start and regulate the immune response.
What is the role of killer T-cells?
Killer T-cells destroy body cells infected with viruses or parasites.
