Lymphatic System Notes Flashcards
What is included in the lymphatic system
Lymph vessiles
Tonsils
Lymph nodes
Thymus
Spleen
What is Lymph fluid
Yellow, colourless and made of interestinal fluid
What are the functions of the lymphatic system
Balence fluids in the body
Protect the body against infections
Where do white blood cells mature
Lymph nodes
Do aintbodies have a specific target or non specific
Yes
Do macrophages have specfic targets or no specific
No
What is the job of macrophages
Break down large pathogens
Where are lymph nodes locacted
In the neck
What is a pathogen
Anything that causes disease
What is the first line of defence
Skin, mucus, celia, enzymes in tears.
What is the second line of defence
Macrophages non specific defence against a variety of pathogens
What is the third line of defence
Specific defence against specific pathogens with antibodies produced
What are some items that lower immunity
Smoking
Stress
Lack of sleep
Alcohol
What is an antibody
Produced by B cells and have a Y shape that target specific antigens
What produce antibodies
B cells produced by plasma
Where do antibodies travel in
Blood plasma
What are antigens
Found on the surface of cells/ pathogens and mark cells. Give identification for T or B cells
Lymphocytes
Are responisble for immune responses
Where do B cells mature
Bone marrow
What is the job of B cells
Produce antibodies
Where do T cells mature
Thymus
What are the job of T cells
Signal attacks
What do antibodies bind to
Antigens, to change viruses shape making them harmless.
What is the first step in getting rid of a pathogen
Macrophages engulf pathogen sending its antigens to the surface.
What is the second step in getting rid of a pathogen
Helper T cells get activated which send a signal to the B and T cells
What is the third step in getting rid of a pathogen
Killer T cells destroy invaiders and wounded cells.
What happens after a pathogen is deafeted
Suppressor T cells shut off immune system so nothing is damaged
Memory B cells save the pathogen incase it happens again
What are the jobs of suppressor T cells
Shut off immune system so no tissue is harmed
What is the job of memory B cells
Remember the pathogen
What do phagocytes do
Clean up any injured cells
Centrifuge
Spins blood
What is in blood
Red blood cells, platelets, plasma, white blood cells
What is another word for red blood cells
Erythrocytes
What is the job of red blood cells
Carry oxygen to lungs and blood
No nucleus
What is the job of white blood cells
Fight infection
What is another word for white blood cells
Leucoytes
What is the job of platelets
Stop bleeding
What is the result of a blood clot
Fibrin, acts like a plug
What are some parts included in plasma
Antibodies
Albumin
Proteins
Water
Hormones
What is systolic pressure
Max pressure from ventricles
What is dystolic pressure
Least pressure from ventricles
What is the ratio of blood pressure
Systolic over diastolic pressure
What is the average blood pressure
120/80
What is the average stroke volume
70mL/beat
Hypertention
High blood pressure
What position increases blood pressure
Laying down
