Lymphatic System Flashcards
-are located among the course of the lymphatic vessels. They serve to trap and filter foreign particles
Lymph nodes
Is a network of vessels and tissues through which fluids can flow from the interstitial spaces into the blood
Lymphatic system
Rhythmic wave like movement of the vessels , valves and the action of the skeletal muscle
Peristalsis
Drain from the tissue spaces, protein containing fluid that escapes from blood capillaries .
Lymphatic vessels
Found in the pharynx this tissue contains an abundance of lymphocytes and macrophages
Tonsils/adenoids
Found in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. It stores antibodies and platelets, and phagocytizes bacteria and old red blood cells
Spleen
Found in the chest of children it is the site of T cell maturation. Atrophies with age
Thymus gland
Located in the intestines where immune function is especially important
Peyers patches
Located in the deep layers of the epidermis. Thy capture and process foreign antigens
Langerhans cells
Located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen
Vermiform appendix
- Absorption and transport of fatty acids from the GI tract to the circulatory system
- Removal of excess fluids from the body tissues
- Immunity
Are functions of what
Functions of the lymphatic system
The body’s ability to resist infection or destruction by foreign organisms collectively referred to as antigens
Immunity
What are the two basic types of immunity
Humoral and cell mediated
B lymphocytes circulate throughout the blood and lymph performing immune surveillance
Humoral immunity
T lymphocytes are stimulated to reproduce when specific antigens are present.
Cell mediated immunity
