lymphatic system Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system
It is the transportation system of the body’s immune system and antigens
What are capillaries, vessels, trunks and ducts
They are long little bloody things
What generates lymphocytes
Red bone marrow and thymus
What is the function of the secondary lymphatic organs
expose lymphatic cells to antigens
What is a lymph solution
Water + Plasma (nutrients) + cells
What are lymph capillaries for
They are to form lymph fluid and take it away from tissues
What does the epithelium of the lymphatic system act as
one way valves
What is a lateal
lymph capillaries present in intestinal mucosa, digest fat
What do lymphatic capillaries combine as
lymphatic vessels
What do lymph nodes do
filter the vessels
Where do vessels drain to
trunks then to ducts, moves the lymphs to major veins
What are the 2 major lymphatic ducts
right lymphatic duct and thoracic duct (RLD drains right arm, right side of head and thorax, TD drains everything else)
Where do the ducts empty into
Junction of internal jugular vein and subclavians
What is red bone marrow for
Making immature T cells and B cells
What is thymus for
Maturing t cells
Where is the thymus located
upper central chest
What do lymph nodes use to remove substances
Phagocytosis
What cannot be filtered out by lymph nodes
cancer cells
What is the cortex
Cortex are follicles
What is the medulla
Macrophages
What are tonsils
Large group of lymphatic tissue protecting against microorganisms coming in from the mouth
What are the three types of tonsils and where are they found
Pharyngeal, near the brain, palatine, regular tonsils, ans lingual at the back of the tongue
What does the spleen do
Monitors the circulatory system to check for defective blood cells
What is the spleen made of
25% white pulp and 75% red pulp
What is MALT
Mucosal associated lymphatic tissue
What is galt
gastrointestinal associated lymphatic tissue
What is balt
bronchal associated lymphatic tissue
What is homeostasis and what systems help do homeostasis
bodies ability to maintin a constant environment; lymphatic, cardiovascular and immune
