Lymphatic System Flashcards
what are the functions of lymphatic system?
-maintenance of fluid balance in tissue (portion of fluid through capillaries into tissues and back through lymphatic vessels)
-fat absorption (absorbs lipids from small intestine)
-defense (filters blood plasma to identify and remove pathogens, lymph organs, lymphocytes)
name some components of the lymph systems
-lymph
-lymphocytes
-lympathic vessels
-lymph nodes
-tonsils
-spleen
-thymus gland
what is lymph?
fluid that enters lymphatic capillaries composed of water and some solutes
where does lymph come from and where is it being transported to?
passed from the tissues and arteries to drain back into the venous system
differentiate drainage regions of the right lymphatic duct and and the thoracic duct
-right lymphatic duct: where lymphatic vessels from R upper limb and R head, neck, chest empty (empties into R.subclavian vein)
-thoracic duct: collects lymph from the remaining lymphatic vessels which do not enter the right lymphatic duct (empties into L.subclavian vein)
name the different tonsils:
palatine tonsils: on each side of oral cavity
pharyngeal tonsils: near internal opening of nasal cavity
lingual tonsils: posterior surface of tonuge
what are lymph nodes and its function
-rounded organs that are located near vessels
-activated if foreign substances are detected
-note: all lymph vessels pass through at least 1 lymph nodes before entering blood
what is the spleen and its function
-serves as a blood reservoir
-filters out RBC
-detects and responds to foreign substances
