Distinguish between endocrine and exocrine glands
exocrine: secretes into duct
endocrine: secretes into blood stream
define hormone and target tissue
hormone: powerful molecules that stimulate specific cells and tissues to cause action
target tissues: specific tissues
describe the common characteristics of all hormones
released from endocrine glands, very specific (think key and lock when binding to certain receptors of target cells),
list and describe the two chemical categories of hormones
lipid hormone: hormones that can cross cell membrane
water soluble hormones: can’t cross the membrane
what are the hormones of anterior lobe?
TSH, prolactin, GH, FSH and luteinizing hormone
what are the hormones of the posterior lobe?
antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin
what are the hormones of the thyroid gland?
T3, T4, and calcitonin
what is the hormone for the Parathyroid gland?
PTH
what are the adrenal gland hormones?
aldosterone (sodium), cortisol (sugar), androgen and estrogen (sex), epinephrine and norepinephrine (flight or fight response)
what are the pancreas hormones?
glucagon, insulin, and somatostatin
what are the ovary hormones?
estrogen and progesterone
what is the testie hormone?
testosterone
