Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system?
System of one way vessels that return lost interstitial fluid back into circulation
What is interstitial fluid and where is it from?
- contains rbc, waste, nutrients,
- Interstitial fluid comes from capillaries which leak fluid when blood pressure is high.
- The fluid accumulates in collects in interstitial spaces where lymphatic system collects it and it becomes lymph.
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
- Drain body fluid and return it into bloodstream
- transport cells of immune system
- transport dietary fats and fat soluble vitamins
- Stage critical immune responses
What is a lymphedema?
Inappropriate accumulation of fluid (clogged)
Where are lymph nodes located?
-arm pits
-groin
-neck
(near where normal flora resides in the body)
How does lymph flow throughout the body?
- forced by body movements (skeletal muscle contraction) and breathing
- semi-lunar valves (one way system towards the heart)
- travels through lymphatic cap to vessels to circulatory system via lymphatic ducts at the junction of jugular + R/L subclavian veins.
Describe the structure of lymphatic capillaries?
- one cell layer thick
- endothelial flaps that close when decrease in interstitial pressure and open spaces between cells when interstitial pressure increase
What areas of the body does lymph come from when it drains into the right subclavian veins?
Right side of the head
Right upper limb
thorax
In was lymphatic vessels does the lymph travel to in order to drain into the L and R subclavian vein?
Right - Lymphatic duct
Left - Thoracic duct
What areas of the body does lymph come from when it drains into the left subclavian veins?
Left side of the body
and remaining portions of the right (lower half)
