Blood Flashcards
What is the composition of blood?
- Liquid portion
- Formed elements (cellular components)
What is plasma?
90% water, 10% dissolved proteins, aa, gases, electrolytes, sugar, hormone, lipids, vitamins
What is the significant elements of plasma?
Albumins, immunoglobulins, fibrinogen
What is serum ?
plasma w/o clotting factor
What are formed elements?
99% RBC with WBC rest made up of platelets.
What are RBC?
FUNCT: Have hemoglobin, iron-containing O2 transport protein
What are WBC?
FUNCT: protect the body against infection.
What are the 5 WBC?
- Neutrophils
- Eosinophils
- Basophils
- monocytes
- Lymphocytes
What is Hemostasis?
Blood vessels are repaired after injury
What are the 4 phases of hemostasis?
- Vascular phase
- Platelet phase
- Coagulation Phase
- Fibrinolysis
What are neutrophils responsible for?
- attack and digest bacteria
What are eosinophils responsible for?
- attack parasitic and antibody labelled foreign molecules
What are basophils responsible for?
- release histamine = allergic reactions
- release heparin = anticoagulation
What are lymphocytes responsible for?
- viral infections
- circulate btwn lymphatic and circulatory system
What are monocytes responsible for?
pass from the circulation to the peripheral tissue where they become macrophages, phagocytic.
