Lymphatic system Flashcards
What is it
it is part of the vascular system, 3 main functions- removes excess fluid and returns it to bloodstream, filters fluid to prevent infections of blood and tissues, aid digestion via the absorption of lipids from small intensteine
plays an important role in reducing oedema, maintain blood viscosity, and vascular homeostasis
structure of lymph capillaries
lymph capillaries are blind ended and have mini flap like valves along their length
as the fluid which surrounds cells (tissue fluid) increases, the resultant pressure opens the way for it to pass into the lymphatic system- opening large enough to absorb large waste products
passage og lymph
once tissue fluid passes into the lymphatic system it passes though a network of gradually increasing vessels in exactly the same manner as that of venous return
capillaries–vessels–trunks– after which it returns into the blood stream via ducts into the subclavian vein
movement of lymph
peristalsis of smooth muscles walls of the vessels
pumping skeletal muscles
suction fro diaphragm
non return valves
functions of lymph nodes
filter lymph
produce and store lymphocytes which fight infection
aids digestion via the absorption of lipids from small intestine
positions of lymph nodes
sub mandibular, axillary, cubital, inguinal, popliteal
spleen
locate din the upper elft abdomen- stores lymphocytes as aprt of immune response
thymus
located against the trachea above the superior vena cava, prominent in infancy providing immunity, aids in lymphatic maturation, programmes T-cells (aggressive WBC)
