Lymphatic and Immune Systems Flashcards
What are the three primary functions of the lymphatic system?
Draining interstitial fluid
Transporting dietary lipids
Facilitating immune responses
What is the function of the thoracic duct?
Collects most of the lymph in the body and returns it to the bloodstream through the left subclavian vein on the left side of the neck
Where is the thymus gland located?
Behind the sternum
What is the function of the thymus gland?
Matures and educates T-Cells
Produces thymosin which allows for the education of T-Cells in other areas of the body
How does the thymus support immunity?
T-Cells destroy diseased cells
Where is the spleen located?
The left side of the body between the stomach and the diaphragm
What is the function of the spleen?
Clearing worn out red blood cells and other foreign bodies from the bloodstream.
The spleen helps control the amount of blood and blood cells that circulate through the body and helps destroy damaged cells
How does the spleen support immunity?
It houses T-Cells and Macrophages which destroy bacteria, dead tissue, and foreign matter that enter the spleen
How does Yogasana increase the function of the lymphatic and immune system?
Moves lymph through muscle contraction, movement, gravity and breathing
Certain poses squeeze and release the lymph nodes
How does Pranayama increase the function of the lymphatic and immune system?
Moves lymph through muscle contraction, movement, gravity and breathing
How does Bandha increase the function of the lymphatic and immune system?
Mula Bandha and Uddiyana bandha aids the movement of lymph towards the thoracic duct
Jalandhara bandha helps squeeze the lymph nodes around the throat and neck
