What is the lifecycle of most Dictyocaulus species affecting the lungs?

A

Embryonated eggs in lungs, coughed up and swallowed, L1 in fresh faeces (eggs in equine), L1-L3 in dungpat, ingestion of infective larvae, migrate via lymphatics to lungs, mature into adults.

Equine lungworm. Adults in smaller bronchi. Donkey’s are the main source of infection, as they can remain infected for years.

What is Filaroides osleri? How is it spread? How do you treat it?

A

Canine lungworm. Bitch spreads it to puppies in sputum (L1). Adults in fibrous nodules in trachea. Treat with Fenbendazole (50mg/kg for 7d)

Feline lungworm. IH = molusc. Usually asymptomatic but can cause problems in immunocompromised cat.
