Locomotor Parasites Flashcards
What are the three important locomotor parasites?
Sarcocystis, Taenia, Trichenella
What is the most important Sarcocystis species? What are it’s hosts?
S. cruzi. Final host is the dog, IH is cattle.
Why is Sarcocystis important?
It causes meat losses due to tissue cysts.
What is Sarcocystic neurona though to cause?
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis
Name the 2 species of taenia where human is the final host. What is their IH?
T. saginata (cow), T. solium (pig)
Name the 5 species of taenia where dog is final host. What is their IH?
T. hydatigena (sheep), T. ovis (sheep), T. multiceps (sheep), T. serialis (rabbit), T. pisiformis (rabbit)
What part of the lifecycle are the cysts of taenia?
The metacestodes e.g. Cysticercus, Coernurus.
Where would you find the cysts of T. saginata in cattle?
Cysticercus found in the muscle esp. heart and masseter.
What is the Taenia species that has the cat as it’s final host?
T. taeniaformis (IH = mouse).
How do you tell the difference between Taenia and Diphylidium proglottids?
Taenia are rectangular, with one lateral pore. Eggs are single. In diphylidium, it is rounded, eggs are in pockets with two pores.
What is the important Trichenella species? Why it is important?
T. spiralis. It is a serious public health hazard (zoonotic) Most commonly associated with pigs (but not only pigs)
What is important about the lifecycle of Trichenella?
Larvae form a ‘nurse cell’ in striated muscle, where they are intracellular and reprogramme the cell.,
What are the important ways of controlling Trichenella?
Pigs must not be allowed to scavenge, boil swill adequately, cook pork well.
