GIT Identification Flashcards
Identify these adult nematodes - Ovine PGE
Top: Haemonchus Contortus
Middle: Ostertagia Circumcincta (type 1 and 2)
Bottom: Trichostrongylus Axei(abomasum, diff sp in S.int) - black scours
All in abomasum but trichostronglyus of most importance in S.int.
What type of egg is this?
Stronglye egg - the strongyles are :
- Trichostrongyloidea
- Strongyloidea
- Hookworms/ancylostomatoidea
What PGE egg is this?
Nematodirus spp. Larger than strongyle eggs
What Ovine PGE egg is this?
Nematodirus battus - straight sides and brownish in colour
Which Ovine PGE parasite has a barbers pole appearance?
Haemonchus contortus - in the abomasum. More cycles per year in tropical conditions
Which equine PGE large strongyle is this?
S.vulgaris - double row of leaf crowns, teeth, dorsal gutter
int - arteries - verminous endarteritis on aorta - ant.mesenteric a - int
Which equine PGE large strongyle is this?
S.edentatus - double row of leaf crowns, teeth, dorsal gutter for secretions
Int - liver - peritoneum - int
Which equine PGE nematode does this head belong to?
small strongyles - cyathostomins
Small, shallow buccal cavity, double row of leaf crowns, may have teeth
plug feeders
migrate into int. mucosa only
Which nematode family does this belong to?
Ascarids/roundworms as has 3 lips.
this picture is Parascaris equorum - equine PGE
Hepato-tracheal migration
Which nematode PGE does this egg belong to? (Ascarid)
Parascaris equorum - thick, pitted and sticky shell to prolong survival and allow passive spread
Which equine PGE nematode is this? - 1/3 of body is oesophagus
Strongyloides westeri ( a rhabditoidea not a strongyle! )
first foal parasite - in milk
only female parasitic
adult can be free living (non-parasitic) or parasitic
Which equine PGE eggs are these and where would you find them?
Oxyuris Equi ( pinworm/oxyuroidea) on perineal skin
egg laying - irritation - broken hair/bald patch - seat itch in horses
Which pig PGE does this egg belong to?
(non-bursate nematode)
Ascaris Suis - in S.int
egg has thick brown sticky shell - contaminates buildings so hard to kill.
hepato-tracheal migration
What is this lesion in pigs liver and what caused it?
Ascaris suis - milk spot lesions caused by migrating larvae as they undergo hepato-tracheal migration.
Dont see in later infections as are immune so l2 killed before reaching liver
What pig PGE egg is this?
Trichuris suis ( whipworm / trichinelloidea)
prefers warmer climates
can cause autoimmune bowel disease in humans
