Lungs and respiration Flashcards
what are the two types of respiration?
aerobic respiration (uses oxygen) and anaerobic respiration (doesn’t use oxygen
what is the purpose of respiration?
to produce energy
what is the chemical formula for respiration?
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ = 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
Where does gas exchange happen?
in the alveoli, through the capillaries and into the blood by diffusion
what gases are exchanged during gas exchange?
oxygen and carbon dioxide
what adaptions to the alveoli have?
there are loads of them, increasing surface area
they have thin walls, making diffusion quicker
they have a good blood supply
what does pneumonia do to the alveoli?
thickens the alveolar walls and there is fluid and blood in the alveoli
what does emphysema do to the alveoli?
breaks down the alveolar membranes
where does anaerobic respiration happen?
in muscle cells and plants and yeast
what is the formula for anaerobic respiration in muscles?
glucose = lactic acid
what does anaerobic respiration allow us to do?
to keep us using our muscles a little while longer
which type of respiration provides more energy?
aerobic respiration
what is the formula for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast?
glucose = ethanol and carbon dioxide
what is fermentation used for?
to make bread rise and make alcoholic drinks
how to see anaerobic respiration through experiment?
solution of glucose and yeast in a test tube that has no O2 in it connected to limewater. the CO2 will make the limewater cloudy
