Lung volumes Flashcards
1
Q
Give a definition for anatomic dead space and physiologic dead space.
A
Anatomic dead space is the volume of gas occupying the conducting zones, and is usually 150mL. Physiologic dead space is the anatomic dead space plus the alveolar dead space. Healthy lungs do not have any alveolar dead space, but diseased lungs have alveolar dead space which refers to the diseased respiratory zone that does not contribute to gas exchange and CO2 elimination.
2
Q
How is anatomic dead space measured?
A
Fowler’s method
3
Q
How is physiologic dead space measured?
A
Bohr’s method
4
Q
Describe each of the lung volumes / capacities, and the normal value of each volume.
A
Tidal volume: 500mL Functional residual volume: 2.5L Residual volume: 1.5L Total Lung Capacity: 7L Vital Capacity = TLC - RV = 5.5L
