Lung Gross Anatomy Flashcards
What are the three parts of the sternum?
Top to bottom: Manubrium, body, and xyphoid process
What does the manubrium articulate with?
Clavicles and costal cartilage of 1st and 2nd ribs
What does the body of the sternum articulate with?
The 2nd to 10th ribs.
What does the xyphoid process do?
It is an attachment point for abdominal muscles.
How many pairs of ribs do we have?
12
Which ribs are considered true ribs?
1-7
Which ribs are false ribs and why?
8-10. They are attached to the costal cartilage of the 7th rib instead of articulating with the sternum directly.
Which ribs are floating ribs and why?
11 and 12. They are not attached to the sternum at all.
What two points of the ribs articulate with the vertebrae?
The head of the rib articulates with the vertebral body and the tubercle of the rib articulates with the transverse process.
What is the function of the costal groove?
It allows the passage of nerves and vessels through the intercostal space.
What are the two intercostal muscles and what do they do?
Internal= assists exhalation External= assists inhalation
What are the muscles of forced inhalation?
Sternocleidomastoid, Scalenes, serratus posterior superior, pectoralis major, erector spinae.
What are the muscles of forced inhalation?
Transverse thoracis, serratus posterior inferior, internal intercostal, external oblique, transversus abdominus.
What are the muscles of quiet breathing?
The diaphragm and the external intercostals.
What is the hilum?
The area on the medial side of each lung where the tracheobronchial branch and pulmonary vasculature enters the lung.
