What type of tissue is skin?
Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
What is the outermost layer of skin called?
The stratum corneum.
What are the layers of skin from outermost to innermost?
Stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale.
What are the four types of cells in the epidermis?
Keratinocyte, melanocyte, langerhans cell, and merkel cell.
What pigments create skin colour?
Melanin (brown/black), carotene (yellow/orange), and hemoglobin (red colour of underlying vessels).
What is a papilla?
The area at the bulb of a hair that is fed by blood vessels.
What are the four glands of the skin?
Sebaceous, sudoriferous, ceruminous, and mammary.
What do sebaceous glands do and where are they found?
Found everywhere except palms and soles; produce sebum to keep skin and hair soft, prevent water evaporation, and inhibits growth of some bacteria.
What do sudoriferous glands do and where are they found?
Found everywhere; sweat glands.
What are ceruminous glands and where are they found?
Found in the external ear; produce ear wax.
What are mammary glands and where are they found?
They are found in the breasts and they are modified sweat glands that produce milk.
What is a hyponychium?
The nail bed.
What is an eponychium?
The cuticle of the nail.
What is a lunula?
The half moon on the nail
What are the six functions of skin?
Temperature control, protection, sensation, excretion, blood reservoir, and endocrine function (synthesizes vitamin D).
