lower limb anatomy- inc pevic girdle Flashcards
what does the femoral head articulate with?
the acetabulum
neck of the femur
connects the head to the shaft of the femur
greater trochanter
the most lateral projections of the femur on and sits just lateral to the neck
- attachment for glute muscles
lesser trochanter
a smaller projection just inferior to the neck on the posterior-medial side of the femur
intertrochanteric line
a ridge on bone that runs in between the two trochanters diagonally on the anterior surface on the femur
- attachment for the iliofemoral ligament (strongest ligament of the hip)
intertrochanteric crest
a ridge of bone that runs between the two trochanters diagonally on the posterior surface of the femur
gluteal tuberosity
a long, rough margin located on the posterolateral aspect of the femur that extends towards the base of the greater trochanter
-insertion site for gluteus maximus muscle
pectineal line
a ridge found along the posterior aspect of the proximal end the the femur shaft extending to the lesser trochanter
femoral condyles
two rounded prominences at the end of the femur, act as shock absorbers and participates in the formation of the knee joint
femoral epicondyles
rounded protuberance at the distal end of the femur
- attachment for muscles and ligaments
intercondylar fossa
a deep groove at the distal end of the femur between the epicondyles on the posterior surface
patella
a sesamoid bone that articulates with the femoral condyles distally on the anterior side to form the patellofemoral joint
tibial condyles
the proximal part of the tibia consists of a medial and lateral aspect which form the inferior portion of the knee joint
intercondylar area
between the two condyles which is where the ligaments and menisci attach
tibial tuberosity
elevation on the proximal, anterior aspect of the tibia just below the anterior surface of the condyles
