bone structure, growth/ repair Flashcards

1
Q

what is the difference between bone and cartilage?

A

bone is hard, inelastic and provides structure whereas cartilage is soft, elastic and flexible and stop friction between bones.

16
Q

what order do osteoblasts and osteoclasts work in bone growth/repair

A

osteoblasts appear and lay bone down then the osteoclasts remodel the shape of the bone.

17
Q

chondrocytes

A

cartilage cells that calcify and ossify to form new bone

18
Q

what fuses together during bone fusion

A

the metaphysis and diaphysis fuse together

19
Q

what age is full skeletal maturity

A

25 years old

20
Q

fossa

A

wide depression in bone

22
Q

process

A

localized projection

23
Q

foremen

24
Q

meatus

A

narrow passage

25
condyles
smooth, rounded, elevated often covered in hyaline cartilage
26
tubercle
small rounded elevation
27
tuberosity
large rounded elevation
28
fissure
narrow slit on bone
29
epicondyle
elevation above a condyle
30
cancellous bone
spongy bone
31
sesamoid bones
usually develop in tendons near a joint to protect them for wear (patella)
32
skeletal muscles
attach to and move bones by contracting and relaxing
33
cardiac muscle
found within the myocardium, contract due to the cardiac conduction system
34
differences between a tendon and a ligament
tendon is muscle to bone ligaments are bone to bone
