long answer questions Flashcards
Considering Erickson’s psychosocial theory of development, how does it differ to Freud’s theory and what are the advantages of that to working with children and young people?
Answer text Question 2
Psychosocial and and Psychoanalytic theory both agree that much human behaviour is influenced by unconscious processes. Where they differ is Psychoanalytic theory theorises the inner thoughts were sexual desires and that before they can advance to the next developmental phase, they must resolve the inner conflicts. Psychosocial expanded off that theory and acknowledged the influences of environmental and social factors. These theories help us understand the developmental stages of children.
Choose one construct out of psychoanalytic theory and explain how it could be helpful in working with children and adolescents. Fee free to use an example if it helps you explain your chosen construct.
A helpful construct from Freuds Psychoanalytic theory is Containment. Containment occurs when a child is upset and a parent helps the child regulate/express these strong emotions in an appropriate environment. This sets boundaries as to where and who its appropriate to show these emotions too, as sometimes needs aren’t adequately met. e.g. at school during class would be inappropriate. At home with a parent or with a counsellor is appropriate.
How would you define the term ‘concrete operational’ as used by Piaget? How is this understanding helpful when working with children?
Concrete operational is the first stage of Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. During this stage (7-11 years), children start to think logically and concretely about the world around them. They can understand relationships problem solve using reasoning. Their thinking is limited to concrete objects and experiences, they struggle to think abstractly.
