What was Locke’s view of religion?
They cannot be compelled onto others. Everyone should have their own religious views, because it makes them happy. Religion and government should be separate. Religion should not be imposed.
What was Locke’s belief of the role of the state?
To protect bodily integrity and civil goods.
What was human behaviour to Locke?
It is guided by tolerance and reason.
What did Locke think about the origin of kings?
They were not sent by God, as they claimed.
What did Locke think about the relationship between the ruler and their subjects?
People had natural freedoms that they gave up for a sense of order, but if the ruler took away too many freedoms, then they were thrown out of power.
What did Locke mean by tabula rasa?
This was the idea that our minds are blank slates, and that we learn our ideas from experience.
What did Locke think we should learn?
Ethics, science, practical forms of knowledge. Not Latin, poetry, music. He thought that there was no separation in what was important to life, that there was no higher art forms.
