Localisation Flashcards
Holistic theory
All parts of brain involved in process of thoughts + action
Localisation theory
different parts of brain perform different tasks and involved with different parts of body
What are the 4 lobes of the brain
-Frontal lobe
-parietal lobe
-Occipital lobe
-temporal lobe
What are the 6 areas of the brain and where are they located
-Brocas area (Frontal)
-Motor area (Frontal)
-Somatosensory (Parietal)
-Visual area (Occipital)
-Wernickes area (Temporal)
-Auditory area (Temporal)
What does the motor cortex do and in what hemisphere is it located
-voluntary motor movements
-each motor cortex on each hemisphere controls opposite sides of the body
-Present in both hemispheres
What the somatosensory cortex do and in what hemisphere is it located
-Detect sensory events
-sensory info from skin produce pain, touch, pressure, temp then localise it
-Recieves info from opposite of body
-Present in both hemispheres
What does the visual cortex do and in what hemisphere is located
-receive info from opposite visual field
-contain 7 area, each process different types of visual info e.g movement, colour, shape
-present in both hemispheres
What does the auditory cortex do and in what hemisphere is it located
-auditory info primarily decoded before it reaches the brain, receive cochlea to brain stem
-Cortex recognises it and responds in appropriate response
-Present in both hemispheres
What does broca’s area do and in what hemisphere is it present
-Speech production
-makes speech fluent
-Left hemisphere
What are the 5 AO3 points for localistaion
-Phineas Gage
-Broca and wernicke
-Raine
-Lashley
-Plasticity
What does wernicke’s area do and in what hemisphere is it present
-Speech comprehension
-Makes speech meaningful
-Left hemisphere
What is the procedure of Phineas Gage
-Case study
-Explosion on railway caused iron pole through frontal lobe
What is the findings of Phineas Gage
-everything stayed same but became different person (More aggressive)
What is the evaluation point of Phineas Gage
-Supports localisation
X- Weakness is it a case study
What is the procedure of broca and wernicke
-post mortem
-studied individuals with speech difficulties
-Broca studied 8 patients who all had damage to frontal lobe
