Endocrine system Flashcards
What does the endocrine system consist of
Glands and hormones
What is the endocrine system known as
hormonal system
What are hormones known as
chemical messengers
-long lasting
-slow acting
Where are hormones released into
The blood stream
What is the fight/flight an adaptation for
Evolutionary adaptation for dealing with physcial threats
What does the fight/flight reaction do
help deal with short term problems which could be solved by fighting/running
What part of the peripheral nervous system works in the process of fight/flight
the autonomic system
What is the first step of the fight/flight response
enter dangerous situation
What is the second step of the fight/flight response
Amygdala activated and sends distress signal to hypothalamus
What is the third step of the fight/flight response
Hypothalamus activates sympthomedallary pathway, running to adrenal medulla and sympathetic nervous system
What is the fourth step of the fight/flight response
SNS activate adrenal medualla part of adrenal gland
What is the fifth step of the fight/flight response
Adrenal medulla secretes adrenaline into blood stream
What are some physiological changes in fight/flight
-Heart rate increase
-Breath rate increase
-Sweaty palms
-Pupils dialate
-Other organs may cease function e.g bladder
What are some physiological changes in rest/digest
-Heart rate return to normal
-Breath rate return to normal
-Palms go dry
-Pupils constrict
-Other organs resume normal functions
Why does the heart rate increase
increase blood flow to organs + increase movement of adrenaline around body
Why does the breath rate increase
Increase oxygen intake
Why do the pupils dilate
increase light intake and vision
Why do the palms sweat
Regulate temperature
Why are non essential functions reduced
increase focus for other essential functions in fight/flight
Are fight/flight the only two responses to danger
-3rd response which is ignored
-Freeze
Makes this a limited explanation, has oversimplified human reaction to dangerous situations
What are the chances we might actually encounter dangerous situations in day to day life
unlikely
other modern day stressors: careers, education, money, relationships
Fight/flight not appropriate for these+ these are long term issues making this explanation a weakness
Do women and men react the same to dangerous situations
explanation has beta bias meaning it ignores differences between men and women
Taylor(2000)= suggest women tend to befriend and not fight or slight
make the explanation limited so a weakness
What did Taylor (2000) say
AO3
women and men react differently to dangerous situations, they tend to befriend and don’t fight or flight
