What are the ligaments of the hip?
Iliofemoral, ischiofemoral and pubofemoral
Where is the attachment of the psoas major and iliacus?
Together form the iliopsoas tendon inserting on the lesser trochanter of the femur
What is the innervation of the hip flexor muscles?
Psoas major - L1-L3
Iliacus and pectineus - femoral nerve
What is the origin and insertion of the gluteus maximus?
Origins - gluteal surface of ilium, sacrum and coccyx
Insertion - iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of femur
What is the insertion of the adductor longus, brevis and magnus muscles?
Linea aspera of the femur
What is the origin and insertion of the obturator externus?
Origin - membrane of obturator foramen and adjacent bone
Insertion - posterior aspect of the greater trochanter
What is the origin and insertion of the gracilis?
Origin - inferior rami of the pubis
Insertion - medial surface of tibial shaft
What is the innervation of the hip adductor muscles?
Obturator nerve
What is the insertion of the hip abductors?
Greater trochanter of the femur - gluteus medius, minimis and piriformis muscles
What is the innervation of the hip abductor muscles?
Gluteus medius and minimis - superior gluteal nerve
Piriformis - nerve to piriformis from sacral plexus
What is the actions of the gluteus medius and minimus?
Abduction and medial rotation
What is the action of the piriformis muscle?
Abduction and lateral rotation
What are the external rotators of the hip?
Piriformis, obturator externus, superior + inferior gomelli, obturator internus and quadratus femoris
What is the insertions of the hip external rotators?
Superior + inferior gomelli and obturator internus - greater trochanter of the femurs
Quadratus femoris - intertrochanter crest
What are the internal rotators of the hip?
Tensor fascia lata
Anterior fibres of gluteus medius and minimus
What muscles make up the pas anserinus?
Gracilis
Sartorius
Semitendinosus
What is the origin and insertion of the semimembranosus and semitendinosus?
Origin - ischial tuberosity of the pelvis
Insertion - semimembranosus inserts onto medial condyle and semitendinosus onto medial surface of tibia
What are the actions of the hamstrings?
Biceps femoris - flexion of knee, extension of hip and latera rotation
Semimembranosus and semitendinosus - medial rotation, flexion of knee and extension of hip
What are the roots of the sciatic nerve?
L4-S3
What are the roots of the superior and inferior gluteal nerve?
Superior - L4-S1
Inferior - L5-S2
