Lipids Flashcards
Five types of lipids types in humans
-Fatty acids
-Triglycerides
-Phospholipids
-Eicosanoids
-Steroids
Fatty acid (Lipid)
-Chain of 4-24 carbon atoms
-Carboxyl group on one end and methyl group on the other, hydrogen bonded along the sides
-Precursors of triglycerides and source of energy
Triglycerides (lipids)
-3 fatty acids bonded together to glycerol molecule
function- energy storage, insulation, shock absorbtion
Phospholipids (lipids)
-Triglyceride with one fatty acid replaced by a phosphate group
-Major component of cell membranes
-Amphiphilic (fatty acid tails hydrophobic, phosphate head is hydrophilic)
Amphiphilic meaning
A molecule having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions
Eicosanoids
-Derived from arachidonic acid (fatty acid)
-Hormone like chemical signals between cells
-includes prostaglandins
function (role in)
-inflammation
-blood clotting
-hormone action
-labor contractions
-blood vessel diameter
Steroids
-Major component is cholesterol
-important component of cell membranes
-produced only in animal liver cells
-naturally produced by us
It is a lipid with carbon atoms in four rings
where are steroids derived from
-Cholesterol
-Cortisol
-Progesterone
-Estrogens
-Testosterone
-Bile acids
Hydrophobic organic molecule, composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
